Incoming City Council President Richard Clark Invites Children to Paint the Town

Incoming City Council President Richard Clark will begin his term by asking Jacksonville children, “What does your city look like?” Working with the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Clark will deliver an art kit and canvas to each City Council member with instructions that it be given to a child in his or her district. The completed canvases will be hung throughout the City Council offices in City Hall during Clark’s term.

“A child’s perspective is priceless,” said Clark, “and illuminating. Our city is large and diverse. From the Beaches and downtown, to Springfield and Avondale, we have challenges and opportunities wherever we look. I hope these finished art works will remind the Council members of all that we, as a city, are working towards, and hoping to become.”

Each kit contains paint, brushes, paper, and boards and canvas. Children and their parents will also receive “What If Children Had More Art: Arts Education Resources for Parents and Educators,” and a guide to the city’s Art in Public Places Program, both published by the Cultural Council.

“It is no secret that art is a powerful community building tool,” said Robert Arleigh White, executive director of the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. “I look forward to seeing the ways in which our collective gaze can be uplifted by seeing our community through the eyes of our most important constituents – our children.”

Materials for the art kits were made possible through the generous sponsorship of The Stellar Foundation. For more information, contact the Cultural Council at 358-3600.
