Public Art Work “Stepping Stones” Installed At South Mandarin Regional Public Library
JACKSONVILLE, FL – A new installation of public art by regional artist Nofa Dixon is being completed at the new South Mandarin Regional Public Library for the city’s Art in Public Places Commission. “Stepping Stones” is a design consisting of ceramic floor tiles, hand painted with ceramic glazes, depicting groupings of “Trompe l’Oiel” rocks that are incorporated into the tiled floor beginning in the vestibule and extending past the circulation desk to the children’s area entrance.
This installation is the eleventh of 14 major public art installations slated for the Jacksonville Public Libraries. Other projects this year are Paul Braun’s sculpture at the Web Wesconnett Branch; Larry Kirkland’s bronze owl sculpture, “Wisdom,” at the new Main Library; Liz Mapelli’s glass panel sculpture “SquirrelyQ” at the new Argyle Branch; Kelli Bickman’s mural, “Imagination Tree” at Brentwood Branch; BJ Katz’s glass panel “Sun Salutations” at the Southeast Branch; and Joe Segal’s concrete sculpture “Revelation” at the San Marco Branch Library.
Dixon, a professor at the University of North Florida, has developed a unique individual signature technique using glazes, over-glazes and mixed media to imbue a painterly surface on her tile forms and three dimensional clay forms.
Nofa Dixon’s ceramic works are displayed in many private and corporate collections and galleries in the United States. Locally her work is currently on display at Push 2 Gallery in downtown Jacksonville.
The Art in Public Places Program is directed by the City’s Art in Public Places Commission, with assistance provided by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.
