OVERVIEW
The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and the Creative Capital Foundation are presenting two professional development workshops for artists September 29 and 30. Workshops are open to Northeast Florida artists working in all disciplines. All are encouraged to apply including artists in rural communities and minority artists. The workshop will take place at the Florida Times-Union Conference Room, 1 Riverside Ave., on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30. Please note: This is at the newspaper offices. Free parking!
Workshop Objectives:
Founded in 1999, the Creative Capital Foundation is a national non-profit artist support organization based in New York City. Since 2003, the Creative Capital Foundation has partnered with arts stakeholders to develop and present professional development workshops for hundreds of artists around the country.
Two separate workshops will be presented in Jacksonville. Artists are eligible to apply for either one, or both.
Real Community Engagement – September 29
Artists of all disciplines are choosing to collaborate with institutions and individuals outside the traditional art community to create work that engages topics of social relevance. This workshop is designed to help artists clarify their objectives and gain management skills needed to produce successful community-engaged projects. The day includes project presentations by all participants, lectures, and hands on exercises that highlight practical skills and successful strategies developed by artists for artists. Case studies from a range of disciplines are used to discuss grassroots fundraising, budgeting, negotiation, contracts, communicating about work, working with non-arts partners, maintaining the integrity of one’s work and more. Artists will leave the workshop with a handbook designed to help them outline clear project goals and establish a roadmap for building beneficial community relationships and support. This workshop is designed for artists who have conducted, or plan to embark upon a community engaged practice or project.
Participants will learn:
• strategies for funding work and revenue-generation, including improving fundraising materials; working in partnership with venues and funders; building a base of individual contributors
• how to determine the real cost of the work in order to communicate it to funders, presenters and other partners
• strategies for balancing time and money
• how to communicate about yourself and your work with clarity and confidence, in writing and in person
Funding Your Work – September 30
“Funding Your Work” is based on content from Creative Capital’s esteemed core weekend workshop. It combines nuts-and-bolts strategies with a broad-based empowering approach towards how to integrate fundraising into your creative practice. Topics include: making your fundraising materials embody the rigor and character of your work; working in partnership with venues, donors and funders; building a base of individual contributors; and knowing the real cost of your work so you can communicate it to funders, presenters and other partners.
