2006 Florida "State of the Arts" License Plate Grant Program Awards

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville has awarded Florida “State of the Arts” License Plate Grants to 10 area nonprofit organizations for 2006. Funding is made possible through revenue from the sale of Florida “State of the Arts” license plates in Duval County.
The following organizations were each awarded $1,000 grants for the cultural program described:
ART WITH A HEART FOR CHILDREN – Organization provides an art-in-healing program for sick and injured children at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours Children’s Clinic.
Funds will be used for art supplies.
THE BRIDGE OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA – The Creative Arts Expression Program is an after-school program for underserved teens, which utilizes the arts. The grant will be used towards expenses related to the program such as instructor fees and art supplies.
CARTER G. WOODSON COMMITTEE FOR POSITIVE EDUCATION OF JACKSONVILLE – The annual KUUMBA African Cultural Arts and Music Fest is celebrating 18 years in Jacksonville. This year it will feature and honor performers from New Orleans. The grant will help fund festival expenses such as providing free transportation to attend the event, promotion materials and performance honoria.
THE CULTURAL CENTER AT PONTE VEDRA BEACH – The Art in Action, Art and Youth Development Program at Mayport Elementary provides a free after-school arts program to learning disabled children performing substantially below grade level. The grant will be used for artist salaries.
JACKSONVILLE FILM EVENTS – The Viva Cinema program is a side-bar of the Jacksonville Film Festival. It features Spanish language films and brings in guest filmmakers to meet the audience for after-screening discussions. The grant will be used to bring the filmmakers to Jacksonville.
JACKSONVILLE WATERCOLOR SOCIETY – This organization provides an art outreach program to teach watercolor to students and teachers in public elementary schools in Duval County. The grant will cover watercolor materials.
MURRAY HILL MINISTRIES – This organization provides musical performances in a wholesome environment for teens and young adults. The project will provide artists with a DVD of their live performances. The grant will fund DVD film, preview and recording equipment.
PRELUDE CHAMBER MUSIC – Program offers young musicians the opportunity to experience chamber music by participating and performing in small ensembles with guidance and training provided by professional musicians. The grant will fund scholarships for qualified young musicians who cannot afford the camp tuition.
THE SANCTUARY ON 8TH STREET – The organization serves low-income children in Springfield through an after-school enrichment program and summer camp. The grant will help fund a drama instructor to work with the children in the after-school program.
WOMEN’S CENTER OF JACKSONVILLE – Art and Soul is an art exhibition series and educational program housed at the Women’s Center. Related workshops focus on both technique and the use of creative expression for healing and personal growth. The grant will be used for facilitator fees and honoraria, postage and marketing.
The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville works to advance the appreciation and expression of art and culture by increasing community awareness of cultural activities and issues; providing arts education programs; and offering funding and technical assistance to cultural organizations and individual artists.
